A joint research on the eradication of malaria on behalf of Professor Akira Kaneko of the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka City University has been adopted by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development's International Science and Technology Cooperation Program.Utilizing the theory of behavioral economics, we aim to eradicate malaria in tropical Africa across humanities and sciences.

According to Osaka City University, Professor Kaneko, Professor Tomoya Matsumoto of the Faculty of Commerce, Otarushoka University, Professor Tomohiko Sugishita of the Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo Women's Medical University, and Associate Professor Masahiro Hiratsuka of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University will participate in the research.

Malaria is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. In tropical Africa, the epidemic continues around Lake Victoria in Kenya, and some people are worried that it will spread to Japan as global warming progresses.

Since 2012, the research group has conducted field surveys around Lake Victoria to find out the existence of asymptomatic infected persons who do not show symptoms even if infected, which is an important source of infection. At the same time, we are discovering issues for infection control such as low awareness of infection control and delay in initial treatment.

Therefore, this time, we aim to eradicate malaria by strengthening mosquito control, optimizing diagnostic treatment, raising the knowledge level by utilizing the theory of behavioral economics, and changing the behavior of residents. In addition, Professor Ayumu Shintani of the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka City University will promote multifaceted monitoring using the latest data integration system and build a strategy for eradication.
