Associate Professor Takanobu Muranaka and Assistant Professor Kazuma Ueno of the Faculty of Engineering, Chukyo University will be presented to the top three by audience voting at the 32nd International Symposium on Space Technology and Science (ISTS). Received the Poster Session Award.
The "International Symposium on Space Technology and Science (ISTS)" is an international conference on space-related technology and science held every other year in Japan. The purpose is to contribute to the development and promotion of space development and utilization by sharing cutting-edge research and development related to technology, science, medical care, etc. in space among researchers. In recent years, it has become a large-scale event that attracts more than 1,000 participants from all over the world.
The paper by Associate Professor Muranaka and Assistant Professor Ueno, who received the Poster Session Award, is "Research on Space Debris Removal".This is a joint research with JAXA that describes the proposal and principle of a new method for removing "space debris" such as used rockets and the remains of artificial satellites, which have become a major threat to space utilization in recent years. , Has been in progress since 2017.The removal of space debris is also a research subject that JAXA will strategically work on to become a pillar of the space industry and commercialization in the 2020s for the purpose of ensuring the safety of space activities.
This award was highly evaluated not only as a new space debris removal technology, but also as a highly technically feasible method. In the future, we plan to start full-scale demonstration of the principle in the laboratory, and in the future we aim to develop this technology into a product that can actually be used in outer space.
