A research group led by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and the National Institute of Polar Research has succeeded in developing a system that can estimate the sudden increase in radiation associated with solar flares in real time.The increase in solar radiation is detected by ground and satellite observation equipment, and is used to manage the exposure of aircraft crew members.

 According to the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Hiroshima University, Nagoya University, and Ibaraki National College of Technology have also joined the research group.The name of the new system is "WASAVIES", which is a mechanism to evaluate the exposure dose using artificial satellite data immediately after observing an increase in solar radiation on the ground.This enables highly accurate exposure dose estimation anywhere from the ground to an altitude of 100 km.

 Solar radiation increases suddenly due to solar flares that occur about once a year, and decreases in a few hours.Although it is necessary to manage the exposure of the crew of commercial aircraft, it has not been possible to estimate the exposure dose because it is not possible to predict the occurrence of solar flares in advance.

 By using Wasabies, commercial airlines can take measures such as avoiding airspace with high radiation doses and lowering flight altitude.

 In the future, the research group will further improve the accuracy of Wasabies and extend the system to outer space so that it can be used for astronaut exposure management in manned exploration of the moon and planets.
