The EF EPI English Proficiency Index is a chronological study of English proficiency in non-English speaking countries and regions, based on previous year's data from the free online English proficiency test EF SET published and provided by EF. Published annually as a benchmark for measuring and tracking.EPI, an English proficiency level that divides the English level of all participating countries into 5 levels (very high / high / standard / low / very low) based on the world ranking of the index (EF EPI score) and the exponential distribution. It consists of an analysis report that compares indexes and external indicators and summarizes trends by country / region, and eight editions have been published since the first edition in 2011.

In the 230 ranking, which expanded to 100 million test takers and 2019 countries and regions surveyed, the world's No. 1 was the Netherlands, No. 2 Sweden, No. 3 Norway, No. 4 Denmark, and No. 5 Singapore. The number of countries ranked as "very high" English proficiency, which is the highest in the five levels of proficiency, has risen to a record high of 5 countries, indicating that the global English proficiency continues to rise.On the other hand, Japan's English proficiency level belongs to the "low" level, and the English proficiency index fell 14 points from 2018 to 0.29 (51.51 results 2018), ranking 51.80rd out of 100 countries (53 2018th). ..

Following the release of the 2019 EF EPI English Proficiency Index, EF President Sancholi Lee said, "The 2019 report also shows a marked difference between Japan and other countries. School English education will change from 2020, but if we can measure the language learning acquisition status of each learning group such as school and region, we expect that it will lead to the development of more effective learning methods and curriculums. I commented.

Along with the 2019 report, a related report "EF EPI-s" that analyzes the English proficiency test results of 13 students attending full-time schools between the ages of 22 and 35 is also released at the same time.
