A joint research group of the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has released a system that allows anyone to monitor the water cycle in Japan's land areas such as rivers at any time.It can be used for forecasting flood danger information during typhoons and torrential rains, and will be useful for disaster prevention by providing data in the future.
According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the joint research group is based on a simulation system that estimates the water cycle in the land area developed and operated by the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo and the Earth Observation Research Center of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. We have developed a new system to estimate the water cycle by dividing the country into about 1 km square.
It is possible to monitor the estimation results of river flow and flooded areas throughout Japan from the simulation technology of the University of Tokyo and satellite observation data of the Aerospace Research and Development Organization. As a result of the prediction simulation, we were able to calculate the danger information of flood occurrence in the Chikuma River in Nagano Prefecture, which suffered great damage.
Anyone can use detailed river flow data and flood area prediction data for free.Currently, the data is released one day late, but the policy is to switch to real-time data by the end of FY1.The data will also be used in the disaster location estimation system developed mainly by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, and the joint research group will continue to advance the system.
