The research team led by Professor Ryoji Tsuboi of Tokyo Medical University conducted clinical research led by doctors for alopecia and thinning hair in collaboration with Toho University and Shiseido Co., Ltd.As a result, the safety and improvement effect of the cell therapy method using autologous hair culture cells was confirmed, and the possibility of a new treatment method for alopecia of the middle ages of men and women was shown.

Currently, some drugs for the treatment of alopecia pityroides are used in Japan, but they require continuous administration and there are few drugs for women. Moreover, the effect is not sufficient for both men and women. In this clinical study, we are confirming the safety and effectiveness of cell therapy technology and aiming to develop a cell therapy method for a wide range of people suffering from alopecia and thinning hair.

This time, we conducted a clinical study to investigate the safety and efficacy of injection of autologous cultured cells into the scalp thinning hair using a hairball root sheath (DSC) cell processed product (S-DSC).A small amount of skin tissue (several mm in diameter) was collected from the back of the subject's head.It was transported to a cell processing facility (Shiseido Cell Culture Processing Center), and hair follicle DSC tissue was isolated and cultured to obtain S-DSC.Different amounts of DSC cells were injected once into 50 different sites of the hair loss scalp of the subjects (15 males and 4 females), and the total hair density, cumulative hair diameter, and average hair diameter were measured until 1 months later.

As a result, the total hair density and the cumulative hair diameter at the site where DSC cells were injected increased significantly in both men and women after 6 months and 9 months. No serious adverse events were observed.

In this clinical study, S-DSC was injected only once into a small area of thinning hair to determine effective cell concentration and confirm safety. However, in order to actually use it as a therapeutic method in clinical practice, it is necessary to administer it multiple times to the entire thinning hair area to show the therapeutic effect and safety that can be visually recognized. In the future, it is planned to carry out clinical research for that purpose.
