In May 2006, the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) reported on the "Forgotten Science-Mathematics" report on the situation surrounding mathematics research in major countries including Japan and the need for mathematics. ) Was announced. The response at this time was great and contributed to the promotion of mathematical measures.Based on this report, in order to objectively grasp the current state of mathematics in Japan and use it as basic information on mathematics promotion measures, analysis was conducted using a dissertation database, etc., and it was announced on March 5, 2020.

We analyzed the status of mathematical research results mainly from the viewpoint of the number of papers. In terms of the share of the number of mathematical research papers, China, the United States, and India are in that order from the top, and in recent years, China and India have grown rapidly.Japan is the ninth largest in the world after Russia, accounting for about 9-3% of the world's mathematical research papers.Over the last few years, increasing budgets for mathematical research have been suggested in the United States and Germany, and there is a growing understanding of the importance of mathematical research.

Looking at the ranking of the number of mathematical papers by country, there is a slight decrease in the share of the number of papers in Japan, Germany and France.Looking at the changes in the number of papers in each interdisciplinary field, the number of papers in the interdisciplinary fields of science and mathematics is increasing in Japan, but the number of papers in the world is increasing more than in Japan. However, the number of papers in interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, art and humanities is larger in Japan than in the world.

As an additional dissertation analysis, we compared global and Japanese trends with respect to the most frequently occurring keywords in interdisciplinary dissertations. From now on, regarding the interdisciplinary field with Japanese mathematics, there are relatively many semiconductor and robot related fields, especially in engineering.

Finally, in terms of human capital, such as the number of students and graduates, there have been no major changes in recent years, but especially in Japan, it seems that female human capital has been sluggish compared to other fields. Is done.
