The National Institute for Materials Science, Hokkaido Kyoiku University, and Hamamatsu University School of Medicine have succeeded in developing an adhesive structure that can be repeatedly attached and detached, referring to the structure of the soles of flies. It is expected to be widely used as an environmentally friendly technology for a sustainable society.

According to the National Institute for Materials Science, the research group, including Namae Hosoda, the group leader of the organization, focused on the fact that the adhesive structure of the soles of insects is formed at room temperature with less energy, and the spatula on the soles of flies. We have developed an adhesive structure that can be produced simply and at low cost with reference to the shaped bristles. It is also characterized by being able to be repeatedly attached and detached, and it was realized by observing the growth of Drosophila melanogaster in the pupa.

Until now, durable products have been produced by strong adhesion, but strong adhesion is an obstacle to disassembly and separation during recycling. Therefore, the research group succeeded in imitating the process of forming the adhesive structure of Drosophila melanogaster and producing a spatula structure with nylon fibers in only two steps: formation and solidification.

While showing strong adhesive force depending on the direction in which the force is applied, it can be easily attached and detached.Adhesive strength is 9 within 756 square centimeters and can hang a person weighing 60 kg.It can be attached to the arm of an industrial robot to hold slippery products, and it is also considered to be used as a leg of an outdoor robot to climb a vertical wall like an insect.
