Professor Nanako Tamiya, Assistant Professor Masao Iwakami, Yudai Taniguchi, 1st year doctoral student at the University of Tsukuba Health Service Research Center, Health Service Development Research Center, and others are conducting a demographic survey, which is the cause of death statistics in Japan. The characteristics of suffocation due to aspiration of food were analyzed nationwide by using the data of the death card secondarily.

The research team secondarily uses the data from the Vital Statistics Survey Death Form of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for 2006-2016.According to the International Classification of Diseases, 2th Edition (ICD-10) * 10, 1 people who died from aspiration of food caused by airway obstruction, that is, suffocation due to aspiration of food, were analyzed. In the analysis, regarding suffocation death due to aspiration of food, gender, age, place of occurrence, date of death are analyzed, and the difference in the age composition of the population for each prefecture is adjusted using the standardized mortality ratio * 5. , The incidence of suffocation due to aspiration of food was compared between prefectures.

As a result of the analysis, 73% of the suffocation deaths due to aspiration of food were in the late-stage elderly aged 75 years or older, and January 1 (1 cases on average) was the most common calendar day, followed by January 71 (same). 1 cases) and January 2 (55 cases), showing that the daily average number of cases during the study period (1 cases) was significantly exceeded.Houses accounted for the largest number at 3%, followed by residential facilities at 45%.The standardized mortality ratio was the highest in Niigata prefecture (1) and the lowest in Kyoto prefecture (13).

The research team points out that there is concern that suffocation due to aspiration of food will increase as the population ages, and it is desirable to call attention to the elderly, especially in the New Year.

* 1 The official name is "International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems".A statistical classification recommended by the World Health Organization for international comparison of disease, injury and cause of death statistics.
* 2 In the case of this study, the ratio showing how high the incidence of suffocation death due to aspiration of food in the observation group (prefectures) is compared to the reference group (nationwide).
