In a joint research between Shiseido and Dr. Kei Negishi of Tokyo Women's Medical University, Shiseido's original technology for observing blood vessels inside the skin in three dimensions was used to treat spots (stains caused by the accumulation of chronic UV damage). We found that the higher the density of blood vessels present, the less likely it was to improve the pigmentation of the stain.

There are various types of spots in terms of site, size, darkness, hue, contour, etc., and it is known that there are multiple factors that cause them.Shiseido has been researching the phenomena specifically observed on the skin of spots for many years, and has developed multifaceted solutions according to various factors that cause spots. In 2017, we discovered that there is an abnormal network of capillaries in the upper dermis of the spot area caused by the accumulation of chronic UV damage. It was clarified that there is a close relationship between stain formation and blood vessels.

In this joint research, we will follow up on the morphology of stains when the excessive pigmentation of the stains is removed by laser treatment. We examined how blood vessels affect the formation and maintenance of stains. We analyzed the relationship between the blood vessel density in the upper dermis and the effect of picosecond laser treatment * on spots using our unique optical interference tomography angiography technology that visualizes blood vessels inside the skin without damaging the skin.

As a result, it was found that the blood vessel density before the treatment was significantly inversely correlated with the improvement rate of pigmentation of stains (decrease rate of melanin) 3 months after the treatment. This indicates that the higher the blood vessel density in the dermis, the less likely it is that pigmentation will improve.

The results of this study further support the importance of blood vessels in whitening * care.In addition, some of the results of this research were presented at the "38th Annual Meeting of the Society of Aesthetic Dermatology / Academic Conference" (2020/9 / 12-13) and were selected as excellent presentations.

* Picosecond laser treatment is a treatment method developed in recent years that reduces damage to surrounding tissues by using an ultrashort pulse laser.
* Whitening is to suppress the production of melanin and prevent blemishes and freckles.
