A research group led by Hayato Shigeto and Shu Morioka in the doctoral program at Kio University graduate school has revealed that "changes in central sensitization syndrome" affect pain recovery.

The symptoms of pain vary from person to person, and in some cases the pain may worsen. In this study, we created a "pain recovery prediction model" for patients with musculoskeletal pain, and classified and analyzed cases that matched and did not match the prediction, which affected pain recovery. I verified the factors.

As a step-by-step statistical analysis, we first derived a pain recovery prediction model based on the scores of subjects who showed improvement in pain.Next, when a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed based on the predicted and measured values of pain recovery of each subject calculated using this model, (3) the cluster where the pain worsened, and (XNUMX) the pain did not recover more than expected. It was possible to classify into three types: clusters and (XNUMX) clusters in which pain recovers more than expected.

Subsequently, when the characteristics of each cluster were extracted using multiple comparison and decision tree analysis, "improvement degree of central sensitization syndrome" was extracted as a characteristic of the cluster in which pain did not recover as expected. In other words, it was found that the degree of improvement in central sensitization syndrome could worsen the prognosis of pain rehabilitation.

Central sensitization was known to be one factor that modifies pain as well as psychological factors, but this time, the amount of change in the central sensitization syndrome score was extracted as a predictor variable for all cluster classifications. For the first time, it was suggested that changes in central sensitization syndrome affect pain recovery.

In the future, this group will proceed with the study of such changes in pain-related factors and changes in pain, and by classifying patients by subtype, we will proceed with clinical research that proposes an approach according to the subtype. There is.
