Associate Professor Ken Tsuji of the International Research Institute for Carbon Neutral Energy, Kyushu University and others have developed a new technology for efficiently storing carbon dioxide in the ground. If the underground storage of carbon dioxide is realized, it will be a great force to prevent global warming, so it is likely to attract international attention. The research results were published in the electronic version of the international academic journal "Advansis in Water Resources".

According to Kyushu University, the research group used a special CT device to extract the structure of fine intervals between the constituent particles of rock with high resolution, and accurately calculated the behavior of carbon dioxide flowing through it using a numerical simulation method.Furthermore, using it, the behavior of carbon dioxide flowing between the fine intervals of rock was calculated with high accuracy, and it was shown that the amount of carbon dioxide stored depends strongly on the pressure and temperature of the reservoir.By applying this method, we have also clarified the conditions under which a large amount of carbon dioxide can be stored in the reservoir.

The stationing of carbon dioxide in the ground has attracted attention as a measure to prevent global warming, and research has begun around the world. In particular, separation and recovery from large-scale emission sources such as power plants can significantly reduce emissions into the atmosphere, so the importance was pointed out at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Paris. Was done.In Japan, a storage project will start in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido.

Kyushu University

A university that creates "comprehensive knowledge" that opens up the future and drives social change

Kyushu University, which celebrated its 111th anniversary this year, is a core university with 12 faculties and 19 faculties. We have been designated as a "designated national university corporation" that can be an international base by developing the world's highest level of outstanding education and research activities. From the humanities and sociology that we have cultivated so far to the natural sciences, and even the design-related "knowledge" […]
