On November 11, the Jikei University School of Medicine's Professor Kazuki Sumiyama (Endoscope Medicine Course) and the Department of Surgery Obesity Surgery Group announced the first "endoscope" in Japan as a new treatment for obesity. Succeeded in "sleeve-like gastrostomy".

Endoscopic sleeve gastrostomy (ESG) was developed in the United States in 2013.Using an endoscope inserted through the mouth, a part of the stomach is sewn from the inside to reduce the volume (called "shrinkage") so that a satiety effect can be obtained. It does not damage the surface of the body and reduces the burden on the patient's body, while achieving the same high therapeutic effect as surgical partial resection of the stomach.

For obese patients, the addition of this new endoscopic treatment, which sits between medical and surgical weight loss surgery, provides more treatment options. ESG has already been performed on thousands of people, mainly in Europe and the United States, and it has been reported that weight does not increase again 5 years after surgery. The research group was considering the spread of ESG in Japan, where the degree of obesity is milder than in Europe and the United States, but the incidence of metabolic syndrome such as diabetes and hypertension is high.

The endoscopic suture device, which Professor Sumiyama was also involved in developing while studying in the United States, has been commercialized in Europe and the United States and has been applied to various endoscopic surgery. It was first introduced in Japan in a clinical trial to close an ulcer after endoscopic treatment, and various studies have been conducted since then.

In this study, a total of 20 obese patients will be recruited and followed up for 6 months after surgery. If the safety and weight loss effect of ESG are demonstrated in Japan, it is expected that it will be possible to provide safe and effective treatment to many obese patients.
