While it has been pointed out as a social phenomenon that Japanese adults are not interested in romance or dating with the opposite sex, so-called "herbivorous" is often pointed out, the actual situation is still unclear.

This time, the University of Tokyo group has not been well investigated so far, the percentage of people who are not dating with the opposite sex or who are not interested in dating with the opposite sex, their secular change, and the factors that influence these. In order to investigate using data that represents the entire population, we conducted a data analysis of the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research's Basic Survey on Birth Trends, which was conducted from 1987 to 2015.

As a result, the proportion of singles who are unmarried and not dating the opposite sex has steadily increased over the past 30 years, with 2015 in 30 females in their 4s and 1 in 3 males in 1. Was a single. From 1992 to 2015, the proportion of singles aged 18-39 increased from 27.4% to 40.7% for females and from 40.3% to 50.8% for males.By age group, the proportion of singles increased significantly as the age group increased. This was a result that almost directly reflected the significant decrease in the marriage rate seen during the same period.

Regarding the interest in dating with the opposite sex, about half of the respondents who answered that they were single in the 2015 survey said they did not want to dating with the opposite sex.Furthermore, it became clear that singles who answered that they were not interested in dating with the opposite sex, both men and women, tended to have lower educational background and income than those who answered that they were interested.

Of course, there are other social connections that benefit health and life satisfaction other than dating with the opposite sex, but the loss of interest in romance among young adults is extremely low in Japan's total fertility rate. It is also believed to contribute to the birth rate. The study found that employment and income conditions also affect the availability of dating opportunities with the opposite sex, so policies aimed at improving these could lead to increased interest in romance and marriage. It also suggests sex.
