Japan's first on-campus Fab Lab "Fab Lab Hiratsuka" has opened on the Shonan Hiratsuka Campus of Kanagawa University.Formerly known as the community-based manufacturing studio "KU Fab Studio", it has joined the international Fab Lab network since April 2016.It was officially renewed as a Fab Lab Hiratsuka.
Fab labs are citizens' workshops that have a wide variety of machine tools, from digital to analog, with the aim of "a culture in which the users themselves create what they use." We are opening digital machine tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters to the general public.Fab labs started in 2002 under the auspices of Professor Neil Gershenfeld of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Today, Fab labs exist not only in the United States but also in more than 20 countries such as Europe, Africa and South America.
"FabLab Hiratsuka" is the first Fab Lab to open on the university campus.It will be the 16th Fab Lab in Japan.By joining the international network, it has become possible to share information with Fab labs around the world.You can also attend the annual Fab Lab World Congress.The local manufacturing workshop has changed as a cross-border workshop, and the possibilities of invention are endless. In 1 alone, it was used by more than 2015 current students and local residents, and further use is expected in the future.Fab labs are attracting attention as a place to develop young people's creativity and human resources with a rich international sense.
