Keio University SFC Research Institute and Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. are jointly researching the world's first 3D printing data format "FAV" that can output three-dimensional objects with higher expressiveness without going through complicated processes. Since July 2016, 7, the specifications have been published on the website.

"FAV" retains a complicated three-dimensional internal structure such as color, material, and bonding strength by utilizing the know-how of 3D data processing software development by Professor Hiroya Tanaka of Keio University SFC Research Institute and the image processing technology of Fuji Xerox. It became possible for the first time in the world to express a three-dimensional object in a state. It is possible to output 3D prints that retain color information and material information without going through complicated processes.

In recent years, 3D printers that have made remarkable progress have appeared, such as those that can reproduce the complicated internal structure of three-dimensional objects, those that can be expressed in full color, and those that can be modeled by combining different materials. However, existing 3D printing data has limitations such as not retaining color information and material information used for modeling, and when outputting using a 3D printer with expanded expression, the original ability is fully utilized. There was a problem that it was not cut off.

The research team does not describe only the surface of the 3D model with polygons (triangles) as in the existing 3D data format, but the 3D basics so that complex internal structures and attributes can be freely modeled and managed. Developed a data format "FAV" that expresses a 3D model with the element "voxel (3D pixel value)". Since "FAV" can add information such as colors and materials to each "voxel", it has become possible to realize high expression with a 3D printer.

This research is also the result of the "COI (Center of Innovation Program"" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, where Keio University is the core base, and in the future, we will create a society where anyone can easily make products using 3D printers. It is said that we will aim.
