A meeting of experts was set up by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to discuss how to promote internships in which university students participate, and the first meeting was held in Tokyo. We are requesting that SMEs approve recruitment activities through internships, and we will investigate the actual situation and educational effects of recruitment activities through internships within the year.

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, there are 13 members, including Masashi Fujimaki, Executive Officer of Keizai Doyukai, and Toshiaki Kato, a former professor at Ritsumeikan University. In addition to universities and think tanks, representatives of economic organizations also joined.

It is forbidden for companies to enter hiring activities based on the information obtained by internships before the ban on job hunting and hiring activities set by Keidanren is lifted, but some foreign-affiliated companies and IT companies ignore this and hire them. There are many places to proceed. In addition, some small and medium-sized enterprises have strongly requested hiring internships before the opening date, and the government said in its June regulatory reform implementation plan that it would discuss the handling of information obtained from internships.

In Japan, only 2.6% of students participate in internships accredited by universities. There is a large gap with Europe and the United States, where about 6% of students participate, but it seems that the fact that it is not directly linked to recruitment is hindering the spread of internships.

However, if early hiring from internships is allowed, the period of job hunting will be prolonged, it will be difficult to balance with academics, and there is a possibility that the principle of batch hiring of new graduates will be shaken as it becomes a de facto year-round hiring. At the meeting of experts, we will continue to discuss these points after conducting a fact-finding survey.
