A research group at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology has succeeded in developing an innovative "holographic contact lens display" that enables AR (augmented reality) display simply by putting a contact lens in the eye.

 "Contact lens display" is regarded as the ultimate display technology, but until now, even if the display is built into the contact lens, it has been a big problem that the eyes cannot focus on the display.Therefore, this group, which has continued research on computer holography technology, can apply this to holographic contact lenses that allow the eyes to naturally focus on the image displayed on the display device built into the contact lens.  Holography is a technology that performs stereoscopic display by generating a wavefront of light emitted from an object.The holographic contact lens display is a mechanism in which the wavefront from an object located away from the eye is generated by the display device inside the contact lens, and the wavefront from the object is reproduced, so that the eye is the same as the real thing. You can naturally focus on a three-dimensional image.

 The thickness of the contact lens is generally as thin as about 0.1 mm, and the realization of a structure that can be built into it was also an issue, but the thickness of the backlight that laser-illuminates the phase-type spatial light modulator that controls the wavefront of light is used. By using a holographic optical element, it is possible to make it about 0.1 mm.

 In the principle confirmation experiment, we succeeded in overlaying the image generated by the hologram technology on the actual landscape and displaying it in AR.Even if you do not wear a head-mounted display or special glasses as in the past, you can superimpose digital information on the real world just by putting contact lenses in your eyes, so it is put into practical use as the ultimate AR display.
