According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the number of comprehensive selections and recommendations is increasing in the entrance examinations for universities and junior colleges conducted in 2019.Especially at private universities, more than half of the new students are enrolled by comprehensive selection or recommendation, and this tendency is likely to continue in the future.

According to the Ministry of Education, the application rate for university and junior college entrance exams conducted in 2019 was 3.7 times for national universities, 5.0 times for public universities, 9.2 times for private universities, 2.1 times for public junior colleges, and 1.3 times for private junior colleges. The number of applicants for both universities and junior colleges fell below the previous year's level, making it a slightly wider gate.

Of these, the total number of new students from the comprehensive selection of the former AO entrance exams was 4.2% at national universities, 3.3% at public universities, and 12.1% at private universities. The number of new students by recommendation entrance examination reached 12.4% at national universities, 25.3% at public universities, and 44.4% at private universities. The number of enrolled students has increased slightly from the previous year for both comprehensive selection and recommended entrance examinations.

Of these, at private universities, 56.5% of all new students are based on comprehensive selection and recommended entrance examinations, accounting for more than half. In the university entrance examination in 2000, the number of new students by comprehensive selection and recommendation entrance examination was only 33.1% of the total, and it seems that it has increased at a stretch in the last 20 years. The growth of private universities is remarkable, compared to only 16.6% at national universities and 28.6% at public universities, based on comprehensive selection and recommendation admissions.

Unlike general entrance exams, comprehensive selection and recommendation entrance exams are characterized by the fact that the examinee indicates that he / she will enter that university, and from the university's point of view, he / she will definitely enter. As the 18-year-old population declines and the university's management base becomes more difficult, it can be seen as a result of private universities' efforts to retain students.
