The "Sumatra Earthquake Zone Drilling Plan" is a plan implemented as part of the International Deep Sea Science Drilling Plan *.The purpose is to excavate off the epicenter of the 2004 Sumatra earthquake by the American international drillship "Joydes Resolution" and to clarify the mechanism of the huge tsunami. The huge tsunami that caused enormous damage from the 2004 Sumatra earthquake is similar to the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean earthquake in that it occurred near a shallower trench.However, it is not known why a large fault slip occurs near the trench, and it is thought that elucidation of the mechanism of this special fault slip is important for reducing tsunami damage.
