In the international research exchanges conducted by universities, colleges of technology, and independent administrative agencies in fiscal 2019, the number of short-term overseas dispatches and the number of researchers accepted from overseas decreased significantly due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. It was found by the total of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

According to the Ministry of Education, the survey compiled the status of international research exchanges conducted by a total of 2019 universities, colleges of technology, and incorporated administrative agencies nationwide from April 4 to March 2020.

The number of short-term researchers dispatched overseas is 15. It has been increasing since the 4,426s, but it decreased by 1990% from 17 in the previous year due to the influence of the new corona. The number of mid- to long-term dispatched researchers was 2,867, 10.7% lower than the previous year.

The number of short-term researchers accepted from overseas is 2.It decreased by 1,398% from 2 in the previous year.Although the increase has continued for a long time, it seems that the immigration restrictions to prevent the new corona infection have had an effect, and it has recorded a significant decrease to the same extent as after the 6,152 Great East Japan Earthquake. The number of mid- to long-term accepted researchers was 18.2, 2011% higher than the previous year.

Universities with many dispatched researchers are mainly national universities such as the top University of Tokyo, Kyoto University in second place, and Osaka University in third place.Given that the end of the new corona cannot be foreseen, the number of dispatched and accepted researchers is likely to continue to decline, and there are concerns about the impact on the research activities of national universities.
