The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Toshiko Abe, has approved a plan to integrate Gakushuin Women's College into Gakushuin University. From April 2026, Gakushuin Women's College will be integrated into Gakushuin University's Faculty of International Cultural Exchange and Graduate School of International Cultural Exchange (Graduate School), making it a coeducational institution. The Gakushuin Women's College campus in Toyama, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, will become the Gakushuin University Toyama Campus.
For the 2026 entrance examination, which will be the first year for the Faculty of International Cultural Exchange and the Graduate School of International Cultural Exchange at Gakushuin University, student recruitment will follow the admission selection process for the Faculty of International Cultural Exchange and the Graduate School of International Cultural Exchange at Gakushuin Women's College. The enrollment quotas are 140 for the Department of Japanese Culture, 170 for the Department of International Communication, and 45 for the Department of English Communication. In the Department of English Communication, all students in their second year will study abroad at a partner university overseas for six months to deepen and improve their practical English skills.
With the merger of Gakushuin Women's College, from 2026 Gakushuin University will have six faculties - Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Science, Faculty of International Social Sciences, and Faculty of International Cultural Exchange - as well as eight graduate schools, including the Graduate School of Law and Graduate School of Political Science, and a law school, with approximately 6 undergraduate students and approximately 8 graduate and law school students attending.
