Kyushu University Graduate School of Medical Sciences and Japan Medical Company, a medical device development company, have begun joint research on "Hakata Model," a next-generation medical model platform that can accurately reproduce individual tumors and be used for examining various surgical methods and training surgical techniques.
According to Japan Medical Company, Professor Koji Yoshimoto and Lecturer Taisuke Kuga from the Department of Neurosurgery at Kyushu University Graduate School of Medical Sciences participated in the joint research. Based on Japan Medical Company's precision medical 3D model "KEZLEX," the model reproduces the positions of tumors, nerves, and blood vessels with extremely high precision, enabling advanced training for specific cases.
In neurosurgery, until now, a surgeon and their team could only experience a specific patient's complex tumor or lesion in a single surgery. Using the Hakata model, this single experience can be repeatedly practiced by other doctors, improving the certainty of the surgery. Furthermore, medical staff can consider surgical methods from multiple perspectives, making it easier to find methods that reduce the risk of complications.
Professor Yoshimoto of Kyushu University commented, "The goal is to integrate anatomical models and tumor models to improve surgical planning and education on the same foundation. This will allow us to understand the different tumor shapes and their relative positions to nerves and blood vessels in individual cases, and to predict risks."
