One of the top batters in the professional universities starting next year is Keishin Gakuen, a school corporation that operates five vocational schools in the fields of health, medical care, and welfare in Tokyo.Next spring, we plan to open a "Tokyo Professional University" (tentative name) in Koto-ku, Tokyo, consisting of two departments: the Department of Rehabilitation, which trains physical therapists and occupational therapists, and the Department of Welfare and Nursing Innovation, which trains care workers. We asked Masayuki Miyata, the secretary general of the university's preparatory office, about his enthusiasm and the features of the new university.

Start from rehabilitation and long-term care welfare

Since its establishment in 1984, Keishin Gakuen has been involved in professional training for over 30 years and has a strong passion for vocational school education. In launching the new system in higher education, I was the first to raise my hand if I could utilize the experience and know-how of professional training that I had accumulated so far in a new vessel. As it is the first of the new system, I am currently suffering from birth, but I feel that it is worthwhile as a pioneer.

The Department of Rehabilitation has two courses, daytime and nighttime, with a capacity of 80 and 40, respectively, and the Department of Welfare and Long-term Innovation recruits 40 people only in the daytime course. Our mission is to contribute to Japan's national issues under the founding spirit of "aiming to realize a diversity society in which diverse people can coexist," such as healthy people / disabled people, young people / elderly people.Specifically, we would like to emphasize the development of practical leaders and support the formation of new careers such as employment in private companies such as the service industry that supports the place of life as well as medical and welfare specialized institutions. I am.

By the way, the medical and welfare field to which the two departments belong is one of the few growth fields in Japan. As the population ages, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare estimates that there will be a shortage of just under 2025 long-term care personnel in 38.Regarding physical therapists and occupational therapists, the balance between supply and demand varies depending on the region, but since the number of qualification holders per unit population is extremely low in the Tokyo metropolitan area, how to make up for the shortage is exactly how to make up for the shortage. It can be said to be a national issue.

Unique curriculum to develop business leaders

In addition to aiming to acquire national qualifications in both departments, "Basic skills for professionals" (basic subjects), "Collaboration between occupations", "Fostering international awareness", "Deepening of specialization" (above vocational specialized subjects) ), "Expansion and development of specialization" (adjacent other fields), "Commercialization ability (management field)" (development subjects), we will systematize the curriculum to differentiate it from vocational schools.

One of the most distinctive is the "graduation research" incorporated in "Deepening Specialization". Choose one from the five themes of (XNUMX) sports / recreation, (XNUMX) community revitalization / tourism, (XNUMX) welfare equipment / robots / ICT, (XNUMX) support for people with disabilities / intractable diseases, and (XNUMX) life support / independence support, and experts in that field. You will receive guidance in the form of a seminar.

For example, in the theme of sports and recreation, we do not aim to enhance the sports power of people with disabilities, but we consider that sports and recreation activities will become a platform for social participation of people with disabilities and contribute to the realization of a diversity society. We will collaborate with organizations involved in the management of sports competitions for people with disabilities and the elderly.

In "Expansion and Development of Specialty", for example, with the aim of expanding the horizons to other adjacent fields, for example, the theme of "elderly people get better with makeup" is demonstrated through practice from an academic standpoint. I will continue to do it.There is a lot of interest from companies, and I think this is one of the unique initiatives of a professional university.

"Commercialization ability" is a management practice such as "management strategy for business leaders" and "financial accounting for business leaders" for the purpose of acquiring the ability to develop new businesses and start businesses. From subjects related to medical welfare, we have subjects related to management practice related to medical welfare such as "medical welfare innovation management".Of course, not only in the medical and welfare field, but also through subjects such as "business plan formulation practice", you will develop the ability to utilize your expertise in general companies and take charge of new business development. In the XNUMXth year, all participants will participate in a "Business Plan Contest" to present businesses for companies and communities. We invite other professional universities, general universities, and vocational schools to participate, and not only commend excellent efforts, but also plan to involve companies and local governments in commercialization.

Another unique thing is the "basic skills of professionals" performed in the first year.In collaboration with major retailers, we will cultivate basic skills as a professional by incorporating etiquette and customer service programs for employee training. In this subject, not only will you be active in medical and welfare facilities in the future, but you will also get the image of being active as a "business person with medical welfare knowledge and skills" in places other than medical and welfare facilities such as private companies. There is also the aim of getting it.

Teachers, facilities, globalization and livelihood support

In addition to those who have experience as university teachers and teachers of our vocational school, we actively assign teachers who have practical experience in companies and facilities. In addition, we invite experts who are active in the front lines of the company as part-time lecturers and guest speakers to further enhance the effectiveness of practical training in facilities and companies.

Until now, universities have never evaluated the achievements of faculty members not only in research papers, but also in collaboration with companies and dissemination to society. Also, I think that it is different from the university culture so far that faculty members and staff members hold serious discussions on an equal footing.
In addition, Keishin Gakuen has set up welfare facilities and childcare facilities within the group in order to expand and enhance learning opportunities, but we are also considering adding medical facilities in the future. This is because we believe that we can provide new value by incorporating academic elements as a facility as well as securing a place for practical training.

Taking advantage of being a university, we will also focus on promoting globalization, such as tie-ups with overseas higher education institutions and medical welfare institutions, and active acceptance of international students.Japan is an advanced country in medical care and welfare in Asia, and there are great expectations for exchanges and alliances with aging Asian countries.

Regarding financial support for students, in addition to our own scholarship system, we are considering a mechanism that allows students to “learn while working”.Since the labor shortage of night shifts is serious in long-term care facilities, it is one of them to introduce the opportunity of night shift part-time work to students in the daytime department. In addition, since it is difficult to work part-time during the training period, we are proposing to companies, etc. whether or not they will be covered by social insurance by dividing their annual income into 12 equal parts to stabilize their monthly income.

Message to high school students

At our school's medical and welfare vocational school, about 18% of the enrollees are university graduates and working adults, and about XNUMX% are new high school graduates. However, when it comes to the frame of university, high school students are highly interested, and so far, I feel that the percentage of new high school graduates may exceed the average of our school. However, the XNUMX-year-old population is still declining, so in the long run, I think we must increase the proportion of university graduates and working adults.

The most appealing point for our students is cooperation with industry. After all, for many examinees, what kind of profession and what kind of company they get a job is the biggest concern, and I think that is a big factor that determines the value of the university. To that end, we would like to further strengthen cooperation with companies, secure learning opportunities, and focus on expanding employment opportunities.

I would like the examinees to have a certain profession and have a concrete image as much as possible, rather than the vague image of "I want to learn medical welfare". increase. At this university, in addition to studying in a specialized field, there are long hours of practical training at facilities and companies, so I think it will be difficult to maintain motivation to study just with the motivation of "going to university for the time being".On the contrary, we would like to provide abundant menus that have a clear sense of purpose and can fully respond to motivated people.

As for the future plan of the school, we will first make achievements in two departments, and based on that, we will develop professional human resources that incorporate new fields as well as the health, medical and welfare fields that we have been working on, including the establishment of a graduate school. I want to become a comprehensive university. The simple naming of Tokyo Professional University (tentative name) also shows our enthusiasm for that possibility.
