Ritsumeikan University OIC (Osaka Ibaraki Campus) opened a new building in April 2024 when the College and Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering and the College and Graduate School of Film and New Media were relocated. Based on the concept of "TRY FIELD," which encourages the challenges of those who gather here, we take a closer look at the new university image OIC aims to create, promoting interaction and co-creation between students, the local community, and companies.

Shaping future learning

 Ritsumeikan University's Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC), which opened in 2015, will be reborn. The School of Information Science and Engineering and Graduate School will be transferred from the Biwako-Kusatsu Campus in Shiga, and the School of Film and New Media will be transferred from the Kinugasa Campus in Kyoto. A major educational and research center will be born, with six faculties and seven graduate schools and over 6 students gathering.

 In addition, Professor Norihisa Yamashita (Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies), Executive Director of Ritsumeikan University,"This will of course be a base for education and research, but from now on it will also play a role in 'shaping the future of learning.'"As he said, there is another reason to pay attention to OIC beyond just the relocation of the faculties. That is the existence of the new building "Building H," which is equipped with multiple innovative facilities. The concept is "TRY FIELD," a space that supports people who take on new challenges. With the "fusion of digital and creative" made possible by the relocation of the School of Information Science and Technology and the School of Film and Media Studies, they hope to create a place where social issues can be discovered, solutions can be created, and then implemented.

Cutting-edge facilities bring
Accelerating learning and co-creation

 Of the facilities in Building H, Professor Miyake Masato (Director of the Social Co-Creation Promotion Headquarters) describes the large, tiered classroom "Learning Infinity Hall" as "the most challenging facility." Each booth is equipped with a monitor, camera, microphone, etc., and can connect to the lecture hall, other booths, and the outside world online. As this facility is quite rare even at universities in Japan and abroad, it is expected to have a variety of possibilities, such as allowing groups to interact with other experts online and lead to discussions.

 The Faculty of Information Science and Engineering, which is located on the fifth floor and above, features a "Demo Street" that is 5 meters wider than the legal width. The street is equipped with LAN and power outlets and can be used for demonstrations of robots and other products, as well as for collecting surveys on research."We widened the corridors and made each research lab glass-walled. We hope that by making the activities in these labs more visible, which gives the impression of being 'closed spaces,' we can give rise to new developments." (Professor Miyake)

 The School of Film and Media is equipped with facilities that make full use of cutting-edge technology, including a theater classroom that is the first of its kind at a university in Japan to install Dolby Atmos, a studio dedicated to recording video and sound effects, and "LIST," a green-screen video compositing studio that can also be used for live streaming.

 The shared spaces are similarly packed with ideas to encourage co-creation, such as the Innovation Lounge, with its impressive atrium that encourages encounters and interactions between students through its diagonal traffic flow, and the Connected Learning Commons, a free space that can be used for three different study numbers, from individual to group.
