Future psychology education that creates a healthy future

A modern society where many people have worries. The number of patients with psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia currently exceeds 400 million (according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare "Patient Survey").Based on this situation, psychology is a field that has been attracting attention in recent years. The field is not limited to medical treatment and welfare, but also covers a wide range of areas such as sentiment evaluation and AI.Almost everything about humans can now be said.

How can we improve the healthy lives of people, from children to the elderly? The educational and research institute that approaches this proposition from the perspective of psychology is the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Letters, Teikyo University. It was born in 1988 to scientifically elucidate the mind and promote psychological education that is useful in the real world. We have produced a large number of human resources who can contribute to the solution and support of mental problems by fusing the humanities and medical knowledge. Then, in 30, the 2018th anniversary of its birth, reforms were made to respond to changes in society.

The first is a renewal of the curriculum.By setting four areas of basic psychology, social psychology, practical development, and clinical practice, it has become possible to respond to the course that students aim for and the training of certified public psychologists, which is a national qualification. The other is the modernization of educational and research facilities. The psychology experiment and training facility in Hachioji Campus Building No. 4 has been completely renewed. The facility is divided into three areas: an interview / observation research area, an experimental research area, and a support room / research area.In addition to being able to engage in psychological research on themes that individual students want to explore, they are also used daily in seminars and exercises. We asked Professor Tomoe Hayakawa, the Dean of the Department of Psychology, about the aim of the reform.

"Psychology is now a discipline that can tackle the problems facing society head-on. Therefore, I wanted to further improve the quality and quantity of education in terms of both software and hardware. For example, emphasis was placed on the renewal of facilities. It wasn't just about introducing the latest biometric equipment. The aim was to create an environment that stimulates intellectual curiosity so that other students could see the experiments and practical training from the corridor. One of the features is the heavy use of skeleton walls. We hope that you will develop the ability to detect mental problems sensitively and use the facility to try every solution. "

The satisfaction of students who use this facility and work on research is extremely high.We asked students who are studying the behavioral psychology of children in the playroom / behavioral observation analysis room.

"In order to collect the samples needed for research, we need a space where children can easily take action. In that respect, it is a big advantage that the playroom is large and there are enough toys." You can take pictures from all angles and analyze them immediately in the behavior observation and analysis room in the next room, so you can proceed with your research efficiently. "

What is being done in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Letters, Teikyo University is not an education that enhances the abilities of some students by the principle of competition. It is an education that "cultivates discoveries" that draws out the independence of all students and the motivation for problem solving.Beyond that, the vision of "creating the future through psychological education" is drawn.
