The research group of Professor Kaoru Sekiyama of the Faculty of Letters, Kumamoto University concentrates on listening to the voice of the other person when listening to the other person in front of him, while the English and American people speak of the other person. I found out that the method of information processing is very different, such as listening to the voice after seeing.
According to Kumamoto University, in addition to Professor Sekiyama, Professor Satoko Kuninaga of the Faculty of Letters, Associate Professor Tomohiko Igasaki of the Graduate School, and Professor Emeritus Nobuki Murayama participated in the research group.We gathered 20 Kumamoto University students whose mother tongue is Japanese and XNUMX international students whose mother tongue is English, and investigated the line-of-sight pattern, brain waves, and voice judgment speed during conversation.
As a result, in the case of a natural voice in which the voice and the movement of the mouth match, the native English speaker focused his eyes on the speaker's mouth even before the sound started.On the other hand, native Japanese speakers had a dispersed line of sight and did not concentrate on their mouths.
English native speakers were able to make faster voice judgments with mouth movements, while Japanese native speakers were slower when looking at mouth movements.
By observing the transition of brain waves in units of 1,000/1 second and observing the movement of the brain during voice judgment, the English native speaker was promoted when there was visual information of the movement of the mouth.Conversely, native Japanese speakers also found that visual information interfered with speech judgment.
The research group analyzes that the English native speaker infers the next sound by the movement of the mouth just before the start of the voice, while the Japanese native speaker judges the voice only by hearing.The research results were published in the British open access journal "Scientific Report".
