Professor Hidetoshi Nishimori of the Department of Physics, Tokyo Institute of Technology was selected as a member of the International Standards Development Working Group for Quantum Computing Terminology. The new organization established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest in the fields of electricity, electronics, information, and communications, has already started a project.
According to the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the IEEE working group is chaired by entrepreneur and innovator William Harley, Jerry Chiyo, head of the quantum computer R & D division at IBM, and Andrew from the Canadian venture company 1Qbit.・ Composed of world-class researchers such as CEO Husman.
The working group defines various terms related to quantum computing such as quantum tunneling and entanglement. It promotes accurate understanding of terms and supports the expansion of the use of quantum computing in fields such as materials science, mathematics, and biology.
Professor Nishimori was invited as a member because he is a proponent of quantum annealing (* 1), which is a type of quantum computing.Professor Nishimori said, "Quantum computing is a new field, and there is confusion in terms of terms, so we would like to establish a common international standard, which is an urgent issue."
* 1 Quantum annealing A theory that combines annealing and quantum mechanics, which means "annealing" used in the process of material development.
