A research group led by Project Professor Hisanori Kato of the University of Tokyo, in joint research with GeneQuest Co., Ltd., discovered that genetic polymorphisms unique to East Asians modify the relationship between various eating behaviors and physiques. In addition, according to the type of genetic polymorphism, eating behavior that is likely to affect physique was shown.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genome affect genetic predisposition. In particular, the rs2 polymorphism, a SNP on the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH671) gene endemic to East Asians, strongly influences alcohol susceptibility. However, until now, the relationship between the rs671 polymorphism, eating behavior, and BMI (body mass index) was unknown.

The research group analyzed the relationship between the three by gender based on the genome information and web questionnaire information of about 1 Japanese people. As a result, 2 eating behaviors in men and 3 eating behaviors in women were significantly associated with BMI.Next, we analyzed whether there was an interaction between the rs18 polymorphism genotype and the rs21 polymorphism genotype (synergistic effect due to the combination of two factors) in the relationship between eating behavior and BMI. Admitted.

Furthermore, when we observed eating behaviors related to BMI for each genotype of the rs671 polymorphism and drinking habits, we found In both men and women, the amount of alcohol consumed and the intake of fried foods were positively associated with BMI, and the frequency of alcohol consumption was negatively associated with BMI.In subjects who did not drink alcohol, a positive association was found between soft drink consumption and BMI in males, and a negative association was observed between natto/tofu intake and BMI in females. In type AA (Geto), the intake of lactic acid bacteria beverages and BMI were positively associated in both men and women.

In this study, we have shown the possibility that individual genetic predispositions and drinking habits have eating behaviors that are likely to affect physique. These results are expected to serve as a knowledge base for precision nutrition* for Japanese people.

* To propose and implement the optimal nutrition for each individual's situation at that time.
