On March 2023, 3, Professor Yuichi Uchida of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Nippon Institute of Technology was awarded the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan's Academic Commemorative Award, Nishiyama Commemorative Award for his research on environment-friendly steel refining processes. An award ceremony was held at the 8th Spring Lecture Meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, and an award commemorative lecture was held on March 185.

The "Nishiyama Memorial Prize" is an award given to those who have made great achievements in academic and technological research related to steel. It commemorates the achievements of the president, Mr. Yataro Nishiyama.

In order to manufacture high-quality steel products, a refining process is performed to remove impurity elements to the limit (several ppm to several tens of ppm) from iron in a molten state exceeding 1300°C.Professor Uchida is conducting high-level research on the world-leading refining technology, mainly called hot metal pretreatment, from the basics to the practical use of removing impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur. Developed technology. He also worked on research on effective utilization technology of iron and steel slag, which is a by-product of the refining process, and published many technical papers. This award was given in recognition of the contribution made to the construction of these environmentally friendly steel refining processes.

Professor Uchida commented, "From a global perspective, I would like to continue research that contributes to the promotion of energy conservation and decarbonization in the steel process, which is directly linked to the SDGs."With the increase in global steel production, the deterioration of iron ore resources has become an even greater issue.
