The Public Offices Election Act was amended and the voting age was reduced to 18.A supplementary reader, "The Future of Japan We Open up," has already been distributed to all high school students, and instructional materials for teachers have been prepared. At the end of October, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology notified the high school of precautions for guidance (hereinafter referred to as "notification").The new sovereign education has finally begun. However, the general reaction of adults to this movement is sluggish and lacks a sense of reality.

There are many negative voices."High school students can't do politics yet," he says, and "high school students should concentrate on their studies."There is a glimpse of rigid views of academic ability, education, and the image of high school students, but I would like to propose sovereign education and "adult involvement" while keeping these issues in mind.In this paper, the "guardian" of high school students is regarded as a representative of adults. In addition, "sovereign education" is used to mean "education of political culture" as stated in "notice".

Imagine it first. In the future, high school students will tackle specific policy issues and various controversial issues, as well as election and political systems, and acquire debate and other debate skills. At home, it's not uncommon for children to talk about politics and for children to go to demonstrations. When they learn with strong intellectual curiosity, flexible thinking, and pure sense of justice, their awareness of problems and political culture may easily surpass many parents.A tough time has arrived for parents to be challenged with their insights. So what should we do?

The first is for parents to learn with their children.Parents must be aware that they have not been exposed to satisfactory sovereign education. If you are a younger generation, there are many voters who rarely participate in voting behavior. If so, at least we need to take this opportunity to relearn.Shouldn't we just read the handouts that were distributed?

Second, do not avoid political topics.Do not take your child's political questions seriously and deny or ignore your child's ideas.Such an attitude can be a shortcut to be despised by children.Parents are required to have the capacity to exchange opinions with their children about their ideas and values without making them absolute.

Third, do not react sensitively to sovereign education and children's political activities.Future sovereign education will require ingenuity as a comprehensive program that crosses all subjects and subjects, not limited to political economy and modern society.Of course, trial and error will continue for years.Regarding "notices," it has been pointed out that it is difficult to draw a line regarding the prohibition / restriction of students' political activities in schools, and there is no doubt that the response policies of schools and boards of education will be twisted and twisted. Therefore, it will be difficult for the school to do it if the parents take into consideration individual activity cases and educational practices, and there is concern about the atrophy of teachers. That is why an "adult attitude" is desired to watch over the situation with a spirit of tolerance.

Fourth, support the school as an organization. The bearer of sovereign education is the sovereign himself. It is terrible to hold the responsibility only to the school. What is expected here is the role of local affiliates and PTAs, as described in the "Notice".School support that guarantees political neutrality should function by coordinating with these groups and the Election Commission, which have diverse ideas and human resources on a daily basis. It is also expected to develop a regional program for sovereign education as a core project of the "team school" currently being promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

In short, adults are expected to congratulate Japanese high school students who have acquired world-class human and political rights, and to be prepared and practiced to welcome them as responsible members of society.
