Keiichiro Kanamoto, a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Shinshu University, presented research results showing the impact of consumption activities around the world on endangered species in each region on a map.It was reconfirmed that Japan's consumption activities have a great impact on the reduction of the habitat of endangered species in Southeast Asia and Ethiopia in Africa. The research results were published in the sister magazine "Nature Ecology and Evolution" of the English scientific journal "Nature".

According to Shinshu University, a joint research between Professor Kanemoto and Researcher Daniel Moran of Norwegian University of Science and Technology analyzed world trade statistics and data on endangered species such as the International Conservation Union, and analyzed more than 187 countries in 1 countries. The map shows where in the world the supply chain (* 5,000), which connects goods and services to consumers, affects the diversity of living organisms.

In Ethiopia, coffee and fur consumption activities in Japan have converted grasslands into agricultural lands and reduced habitats such as lions and African elephants. It has become clear that deforestation also affects the habitat of orangutans in Southeast Asia.

By visualizing the impact of consumption activities on a map, everyone can clearly see the responsibility for biodiversity protection.Kanemoto and his colleagues say that it will be possible for each country to respond efficiently, such as by setting up protected areas in areas where domestic consumption is endangering species.
