For Parkinson's disease, which is said to have 15 to 20 patients in Japan, although there are symptomatic treatments to improve various symptoms, a fundamental treatment method that suppresses the progression of the disease itself has been established. Not.

On the other hand, in recent years, attention has been focused on the effect of exercise on the progression of Parkinson's disease. However, although it has been reported that daily physical activity and exercise habits are effective in improving short-term symptoms for about half a year, the long-term effects over several years have not been clarified.

This time, researchers at Kyoto University have collected 1400 Parkinson's disease patients from the PPMI (Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative) study, an international multicenter observational study that has collected more than 237 longitudinal data to date. Using the data, we investigated the effects of daily physical activity and maintenance of exercise habits over the long term (about 5 to 6 years).

As a result, it was shown that maintenance of daily physical activity and exercise habits may be associated with improvement of the course of symptoms over a long period of time in Parkinson's disease. Continuing moderate or higher exercise habits for about 1 to 2 hours once or twice a week was found to be significantly associated with the suppression of progression of decreased stability of walking and posture, and 1 to 2 times a day. Continuing activities related to labor for about an hour was found to be significantly related to the suppression of the progress of processing speed reduction, and continuing activities related to domestic affairs was mainly associated with a decrease in daily life movement ability. It is said that a significant association was found with the suppression of progression.

The results of this study are considered to be the first step in establishing a methodology for controlling the progression of Parkinson's disease by exercise intervention. It has also been shown that different types of activity may have different effects, suggesting the importance of exercise intervention tailored to the symptoms of individual Parkinson's patients.
