The University of Tokyo has selected 2017 outstanding researchers in 37, including Associate Professor Koji Yatani (21) of the Graduate School of Engineering, based on the Young Researcher Independence Support System.Forty-three people recommended by the graduate school and research institutes on campus were examined based on their research achievements.Outstanding researchers will be paid 43 million yen a year as a startup expense for two years.

 According to the University of Tokyo, outstanding researchers are targeted at researchers under the age of 3 within three years of being hired.It started in 40 with the purpose of subsidizing part of the research funds so that research themes can be set and carried out independently.

 In addition to Associate Professor Yatani, the 21 selected were Associate Professor Yusuke Kinoshita (34) of the Graduate School of Engineering, Associate Professor Ko Yamori (38) of the Graduate School of Science, and Associate Professor Shinsuke Koike (39) of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Akiko Takeo (31) of the Earthquake Research Institute and Associate Professor Ayako Kondo (39) of the Social Science Research Institute are expected to play an active role in their respective fields of expertise.
