The standard for prognostic prediction information for cancer radiotherapy proposed and established by Hokkaido University has been recognized as an international standard by the International Organization for Standardization.A technical report for reporting prognostic information such as the predicted probability of tumor control and the probability of adverse events in normal tissues when receiving radiation therapy, and is expected to be used to optimize individual radiation therapy be done.

According to Hokkaido University, the formulation of the international standard was proposed by Professor Hiroki Shirato and Project Associate Professor Keiji Kobashi of the Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine, and was formulated in cooperation with overseas experts in Project Associate Professor Kobashi's project.

In radiotherapy for cancer, in addition to conventional X-rays, new treatment methods using intensity-modulated radiation and particle beams have emerged. As a result, it is becoming possible to use different treatment methods according to each cancer patient and to treat cancers near organs where there is a high possibility of side effects. But advanced radiotherapy is costly, raising the need to identify patients who would benefit most from treatment.

Therefore, Hokkaido University decided that an international standard for reporting information on the prognosis of radiotherapy predicted by a mathematical model was necessary, and proposed its establishment at the technical committee of the International Organization for Standardization. The developed standard received 93% approval in an international vote.

The international standard was officially published at the end of May and is available for sale online.Professor Shirato and his colleagues believe that by using international standards, advanced radiotherapy can be provided more appropriately with limited resources.
