A nationwide student survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the National Institute for Educational Policy Research has revealed that while many university and junior college students across Japan say that they have acquired knowledge that will lead to their specialized fields and future jobs through classes at universities and junior colleges, they feel that they have not mastered foreign languages.

 According to the results, 77% of the undergraduate students felt that the experiences they had during their time at university were useful, such as graduation thesis and graduation work, and 81% said that they used the library for self-study.81% of internships, 90% of overseas study abroad, and 87% of online study abroad were strongly positive, but the percentage of inexperienced students was large.

 As for the knowledge they acquired, 89% of the students cited knowledge and understanding of their specialized fields, 85% of them had social responsibility and ethics, and 81% of them had the ability to collaborate while gaining the understanding of diverse people.On the other hand, only 43% have the ability to read and write foreign languages, and 39% have the ability to listen and speak foreign languages.

 82% of the students felt that they had grown through their studies at university, and 80% of the students understood what they should have learned by the time they graduated.

 The answers of junior college students were generally similar to those of undergraduate students, but 37% answered that they had improved reading and writing skills in a foreign language, and 36% answered that they had improved listening and speaking skills.
