Professor Manabu Hashimoto of the Faculty of Engineering, Chukyo University received the Excellent Lecture Award at the 19th System Integration Division Lecture Meeting of the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers. The development of next-generation robots that recognize the functions of tools by themselves has been highly evaluated, and it is expected to pave the way for the development of robots that think and act like humans.

According to Chukyo University, the research was conducted by Professor Hashimoto, Assistant Professor Shuichi Akizuki, and students from the Hashimoto Laboratory, who participated in the artificial intelligence project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The robot recognized the functions of daily necessities such as spoons, automatically determined how to use the tools, and created its own movements based on that.In addition to mobilizing all the image recognition technology possessed by Hashimoto Laboratory, we have succeeded in automating many of the parts that engineers have manually set up to now by utilizing deep learning.

At CEATEC Japan 2018 held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City in October 10, we exhibited a robot that makes tea fully automatically using tea utensils. At the venue, he succeeded in making tea while actually using real tea utensils and thinking about proper movements each time, and attracted a lot of attention from the domestic and foreign media.

In the next era, the realization of robots that think and act in the same way as humans is required.Professor Hashimoto said, "This research is the first step toward realizing a robot that is closer to humans. We would like to continue to work together as a laboratory to explore future robots." There is.
