According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the number of exchange agreements that domestic universities have signed with overseas universities has increased to about 2016 in FY3.China, the United States, and South Korea are the top three countries that have signed the agreement, and these three countries account for about 8,000% of the total.

 The tabulation was conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's survey on the reform status of university education, and is targeted at all national, public and private universities except junior colleges and correspondence universities.The Open University of Japan is included.

 China is the top country and region with universities with agreements, with 6,920.This is followed by 4,347 cases in the United States, 3,817 cases in South Korea, 2,414 cases in Taiwan, and 1,765 cases in Thailand.

 海外に設けた拠点の数は2016年度で国立大学397カ所、公立大学18カ所、私立大学220カ所の合計635カ所。2012年度は439カ所だったが、2013年度489カ所、2014年度546カ所、2015年度587カ所と増加した結果、2016年度は2012年度を200カ所近く上回っている。

 The largest number of locations with bases was in China, with 141 locations.This was followed by 63 locations in Thailand, 57 locations in Vietnam, 53 locations in the United States, and 34 locations in South Korea.
