Since its inception in 1961, the Department of History at Gakushuin University is characterized by the fact that the three fields of Japanese history, Eastern history, and Western history have been integrated into education and research. In the history departments of Japanese universities, there are many cases where the fields of study are divided at the time of admission, such as "Japanese history department", "Oriental history department", and "Western history department". In the Department of History, there is no distinction between the fields of study at the time of admission, and the field of specialization is determined in the second and third years by increasing interest in the process of learning in the first year.Among the historical studies to be investigated and discovered, the emphasis is on the academic method called "literary history", in which the truth of history is found from historical materials (historical materials) left by people in the past in the form of letters.
