The Institute for Solid State Physics, University of Tokyo and Crossability Co., Ltd. have developed a technology to depict physical quantities distributed in space with shape-controlled dots in transparent resin (plastic) using a XNUMXD printer. It is expected that the understanding of the electronic state in the molecule will be deepened and that it will be useful for the development and education of new functional molecules.

With the development of computers and programs, it has become possible to simulate a molecular structure consisting of many atoms and having a complicated structure. In order to investigate the relationship between molecular structure and molecular function, the electron density distribution (electron cloud) that bears the bonds between the atoms that make up the molecule is important. The electron cloud data obtained by the simulation can be shown on the monitor. However, if a molecular model depicting an electron cloud can be produced, the role of electrons can be understood more deeply.Technology has been developed to depict electron clouds by creating dots (fine particles) in glass using a laser. However, the problem was that the shape and color of the dots could not be controlled.

To solve this problem, the research group has developed a program "Winmostar" that converts physical quantities (electron density, etc.) dispersed in space like an electron cloud into data that can be output by a 3D printer. This program made it possible to easily depict electron clouds in transparent plastic using an inkjet 3D printer.

In the future, it plans to manufacture 3D electron cloud models such as magnets and superconducting materials with complicated crystal structures and utilize them for the development of materials with high performance. Moreover, if this molecular model is used for education, it will be easier to understand the role of electrons in the molecule.Furthermore, since this technology can depict clouds, galaxies, air currents around buildings and cars, etc. in addition to molecules, it is expected to be applied in a wide range of fields in the future.
