Hiroyuki Uchida, a full-time lecturer at the Department of Psychosis and Neuroscience, Keio University School of Medicine, works with experts in schizophrenia research in North America, Europe, and Asia for the long-term efficacy and safety of antipsychotic drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia. We examined the sex and clarified its safety, usefulness, and problems.

In recent years, it has been argued that the use of antipsychotic drugs worsens the symptoms, so it is better not to use them in the long term. There are also reports that this drug causes atrophy of the brain, while vice versa. The findings, which challenge the effects of these antipsychotics, have been widely reported, especially abroad, and have upset patients and their families.

The research group conducted an analysis (meta-analysis and systematic review) focusing on reports with a high level of evidence regarding the therapeutic effects of antipsychotic drugs and their effects on the brain, and reexamined their usefulness and safety.

As a result, it was clarified again that the use of antipsychotic drugs is useful for improving symptoms and preventing subsequent recurrence. However, for some patients, discontinuation or dose reduction of antipsychotics seems appropriate, and it is necessary to study a treatment method (tailor-made treatment) suitable for each patient in the future.
On the other hand, the effects of the use of antipsychotics on brain size do not always match in humans and animals, and it is difficult to distinguish between the effects of drugs and the effects of illness, so antipsychotics are used in the brain. The effect on the atrophy of the patient has not been determined, and further investigation is required.

The results of this study will help resolve misunderstandings about the effects of antipsychotics on schizophrenia patients and their families, as well as clarify issues, and provide future directions for schizophrenia treatment and research. It is supposed to contribute.
