The International Memorial Advisory Council (International Icomos), an advisory body of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), gave Professor Toshiyuki Kono (59) of the Graduate School of Law, Kyushu University at a general meeting held in New Delhi, India. I chose to be the chairman.The term of office is three years.This is the first time that a Japanese chairman has been appointed.
According to the Japan Icomos National Committee, International Icomos is an international NGO (non-governmental organization) composed of people responsible for the protection of cultural heritage in about 150 countries around the world.With more than 1 members, it was founded in 1965 and is headquartered in Paris, France.In addition to working to protect archaeological sites and historic buildings, it has conducted a preliminary survey before registering it as a World Cultural Heritage site and has recommended UNESCO whether or not to register it.
Mr. Kono specializes in international cultural heritage law, and has been involved in drafting the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted by the UNESCO General Assembly in 2003, as well as working on the development of the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties in Bhutan. He became an assistant professor at Kyushu University in 1986 and was promoted to a professor in 1997.He was elected to the Executive Committee of ICOMOS in 2011 and has been Vice Chairman since 2014.
Chairman Kono said, "The current situation regarding cultural heritage protection is very difficult. Without the efforts of Icomos, there is no cultural heritage protection or world heritage in each country. I want to do my best to live up to the trust." Announced the comment of.
