A group of Professor Tomoyoshi Ito and Associate Professor Tomoroku Shimobaba of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Chiba University has developed a unique computer system and succeeded in demonstrating the possibility of practical application of video holography.This achievement was published in the April issue of the English scientific journal "Nature Electronics", and a three-dimensional reproduced image adorned the cover of the issue.
Seventy years have passed since the birth of holography, but video holography is still a dream technology that has not been put into practical use.Indispensable for realizing this dream is the speeding up of holographic calculations, but even today's computers, which are showing dramatic performance improvements, are inconvenient, and in order to freely digitally process holography, 70 more will be in the future. It is said that it will take years.
Under such circumstances, this research group has developed a computer dedicated to holography and showed that moving image holography is possible even with the computational power of the current computer.The name of the dedicated computer is HORN-8, which is the eighth prototype of the high-speed hardware development project "HORN Project" started 25 years ago by Professor Ito.In the field of holography research, Chiba University has become one of the world's centers for high-speed calculation, and its symbol is HORN.Since holography fits very well in parallel computing, this machine succeeded in producing the results of this research by parallelizing a large number of dedicated circuits.
With the further progress of the HORN project, the holographic video system will be put into practical use, and it is expected that 3D television will be realized in the future.
