Chiba Gakuen, a school corporation that operates Chiba University of Commerce, has begun ESG investment to determine investment destinations in consideration of corporate initiatives for the environment, society, and corporate governance.The aim is to secure the resources for benefit-type scholarships, and we are also considering contributing to the creation of a sustainable society in Japan.

 According to Chiba University of Commerce, the funds to be managed are 10 billion yen, targeting Japanese stocks.Entrust to Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank.The investment destination will be decided based on the ESG evaluation conducted by Japan Research Institute and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank.

 In ESG investment, in addition to financial statements that show the financial and business conditions of a company, the state of efforts such as reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, appropriate labor management for employees, and independence of outside directors are also used as factors for investment decision making.

 It became widespread in Europe and the United States in 2006 when the United Nations announced the Principles for Responsible Investment, which encourages investors to look at the response to ESG issues and invest. As of May 2017, more than 5 pension funds and managers worldwide have signed the Principles for Responsible Investment.The total assets under management such as the signed pension fund are said to amount to about 1,700 trillion yen.

 Chiba University of Commerce is pursuing affluence by working on a university with 100% renewable energy, promoting and enlightening ethical consumption (* 1), and holding a special lecture "Thinking about sustainable (sustainable) living" across faculties. We have been developing activities in line with the UN policy of protecting the earth.As part of this investment, we aim to expand the education and research environment while contributing to the creation of a sustainable society.
