On March 2023, 3, the Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering established the "Cultivated Meat Future Creation Consortium" with Shimadzu Corporation, Itoham Yonekyu Holdings Co., Ltd., Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., and Sigmaxis Co., Ltd.

The purpose of the “Cultivated Meat Future Creation Consortium” is to “concrete efforts for social implementation of edible cultured meat manufacturing technology using 3D bioprinting”.Through collaboration beyond companies, we will promote “application development of 3D bioprint technology,” “establish a consistent value chain from production to distribution,” and “contribute to the development of laws and regulations through collaboration with government agencies and private companies.” We will focus on “transmitting information that leads to the promotion of consumer understanding” such as the exhibition at the Japan International Exposition (Osaka / Kansai Expo) in 2025, aiming to realize the world's first edible cultured meat.

The 3D bioprinting technology developed by Osaka University allows the creation of muscle tissue structures at will, and is expected to be used in the fields of food, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery. In August 2021, Osaka University and Toppan Printing et al. published a paper on technology for 8D printing different fibrous tissues such as muscle, fat, and blood vessels, and bundling and integrating them.Based on this technology, Osaka University, Shimadzu, and Sigmasys signed a collaboration agreement in March 3 for the "social implementation of 2022D bioprinting technology" and started working on its practical application.

The “Cultivated Meat Future Creation Consortium” to be established this time will further develop these collaborations with the participation of Itoham Yonehisa, who has knowledge of meat cultivated over many years, and accelerate technological development.Prior to its establishment, in January 2023, Osaka University, Shimadzu, Itoham Yonekyu, Toppan Printing, and Sigmaxis signed an agreement for the social implementation of edible cultured meat technology by 1D printing, and started activities. I built a system.

In conjunction with the establishment of the consortium, Osaka University, Itoham Yonekyu, and Toppan Printing have opened a joint research course for social implementation of cultured meat on the Suita campus of Osaka University. This joint research course and the Osaka University-Shimadzu Analytical Innovation Collaborative Research Laboratory established in December 2019 will serve as the research promotion bases for this consortium.

The "true value" of each person becomes the "evolution" of Osaka University. To a university that lives in the community and extends to the world

Osaka University is a research-based university with 11 faculties and 23 departments. Since its founding in 1931, with the motto of "living in the region and extending to the world," we have created an outstanding "foundation" and "power" that weaves advanced education and research capabilities, the harmony of faculty and staff, and the weight of tradition and the advantage of Osaka. I have.Taking advantage of these excellent potentials […]
