Professor Yasunori Taga of Chubu University has developed a transparent thin film that can be applied to glass or plastic windows to significantly reduce heat intrusion and outflow. It has also been confirmed that the energy consumption of air conditioners used for summer cooling and winter heating can be reduced by approximately 20%.

According to Chubu University, the film they developed is a film made by laminating a silver film about 10 nanometers thick (nanometer is 10/1 billion) and a ceria (cerium oxide) film about 30 nanometers thick.Silver has the property of not easily absorbing or releasing heat, and ceria protects the silver, creating a heat-retaining and heat-shielding effect when attached to glass or plastic surfaces.

In an experiment where the outside temperature was set to 50 degrees and the indoor temperature was 25 degrees, when this film was used as a window on a 3 mm thick transparent plastic, the temperature of the heat radiated into the room from the window surface was reduced from 49 degrees to 26 degrees. I was able to lower it.

Even in an experiment where the outdoor temperature was 6 degrees Celsius and the indoor temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, the temperature of the heat released from the window surface to the outside was lowered from 14 degrees Celsius to 7.8 degrees Celsius, suppressing the outflow of heat. Both experiments have shown that the power consumption of air conditioners can be reduced by approximately 20%.

Although Japanese homes have better ventilation than those in Europe and the United States, they are said to be significantly inferior in insulation, which has been an impediment to efforts to save energy. This film is thin, approximately 40 nanometers thick, and allows almost all visible light to pass through without affecting the brightness of the room.Professor Taga aims to commercialize the project in the housing, office, and automobile fields.
