The Japan Medical Association has announced the winners of the 12th Japan Medical Association Red Beard Award.  The "Japan Medical Association Red Beard Award" spotlights doctors who support the lives of local residents with a focus on health in local medical settings, and by recognizing their achievements, improves the medical environment and enhances medical activities in each region.  The name ``Akahige Grand Prize'' is derived from Shugoro Yamamoto's historical novel ``Akahige Medical Story'', in which the main character, Sho Ogawa, was active at the Koishikawa Nursery School, a poor relief facility during the mid-Edo period. It is modeled after an actual ship. Since the establishment of the award, five doctors have been selected to receive the Red Beard Award each time, and from the 5th edition, the Red Beard Achievement Award was also created to honor their achievements.

 This time, the 12th time, the selection meeting will be held on November 2023, 11 at the Japan Medical Association Small Auditorium. Continuing from last time, medical students (this year, there were two students who entered Gifu University and Saga University through regional slots, totaling four people) also participated as selection committee members, and the selection was conducted from the perspective of ``this kind of doctor I want to become in the future.'' Nineteen people were selected for the ``Red Beard Achievement Award'' from among the candidates recommended by the prefectural medical associations, and the following five were selected for the ``Red Beard Award.''
