The name ``Akahige Grand Prize'' is derived from Shugoro Yamamoto's historical novel ``Akahige Medical Story'', in which the main character, Sho Ogawa, was active at the Koishikawa Nursery School, a poor relief facility during the mid-Edo period. It is modeled after an actual ship. Since the establishment of the award, five doctors have been selected to receive the Red Beard Award each time, and from the 5th edition, the Red Beard Achievement Award was also created to honor their achievements.
