From April 2019, Chiba University will conduct a demonstration experiment of "pedestrian separation" that separates pedestrian and bicycle lanes on some roads (Yayoi Street) for the purpose of ensuring the safety of pedestrians passing through the campus. I went there until August. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the safety was improved, and we decided to introduce it in earnest from October 4, 8.

Chiba University Nishi-Chiba Campus has many bicycle users, and the flow lines of bicycles and pedestrians are intricate, so there was a high risk of contact accidents. Therefore, in July 2017, the "Environmental ISO Student Committee," a student organization engaged in environmental activities, submitted a proposal for "pedestrian separation" to the university from the perspective of ensuring the safety of pedestrians. From 7, we will conduct a preliminary survey, discuss the timing of the demonstration experiment, the specifications of the dedicated lane, etc. with the university side and proceed with the planning, and the facility environment department will construct the lane. For about four months from April 2018, we conducted a pedestrian-vehicle separation demonstration experiment on some roads (Yayoi-dori) on campus.

During the experiment, the Student Committee photographed the streets with a video camera, measured the number of cyclists and pedestrians passing by before class and during lunch breaks, and the number of lane violators, and calculated the violation rate. The analyzed videos were for 4 days from April to June, and were shared by 6 students. As a result, it was found that the violation rate tends to decrease as the "pedestrian separation" becomes established, and that many bicycles do not keep the left side traffic in the bicycle lane.In addition, a questionnaire was conducted for all students and faculty members in order to investigate the impressions and consciousness of "walking vehicle separation".As a result, "Pedestrian vehicle separation" was found in the questionnaire survey, such as "Awareness of the experiment 34%", "20-91% of people who pass by with awareness of separation", and "7% in favor of continuing separation". I was able to show the results of.

In response to these results, in July 2019, the Student Committee submitted a proposal to the university regarding the full-scale introduction of "pedestrian-vehicle separation."At the suggestion of the students, the Campus Development Planning Office consulted with the University Management Council and officially decided to introduce "walking vehicle separation".After the introduction was decided, it was fully introduced on October 7st with minor improvements such as measures to prevent cars from entering and adding English notation to posters so that international students can understand.Even after the introduction, the Student Committee will continue to conduct video analysis, etc. to confirm the establishment status of pedestrian-vehicle separation and the existence of dangerous points, and plan to make improvements as necessary.
