On November 2019, 11, the Central Executive Committee of the All Japan Medical Student Autonomy Federation issued an urgent statement calling for a correction of the burden on students due to the new study support system and the increase in tuition fees. The target of study support is limited, the current support system for middle-income households is expected to be reduced, and there is a backlash that successive increases in tuition fees could have a significant impact on students.

According to the Medical Federation, the urgent statement gave some evaluation to the university study support law that will come into effect from 2020, but it gave some evaluation to the start of support for students attending private universities and vocational schools, which were extremely inadequate. The target is limited, and on the contrary, it is a problem that the support received by middle-income households will disappear, and it is requested that the tuition reduction and exemption do not retreat.

Regarding the fact that many universities such as Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Chiba University have raised tuition fees, we strongly requested that all national, public and private universities do not raise their tuition fees any further.

According to a national student questionnaire conducted by the student group Free Higher Education Project Free, which is investigating the problems of tuition and scholarships, from April to July, 4% of students use scholarships, but for financial reasons. More than 7% of the students answered that they gave up on clothes, fashion, travel, food expenses, drinking parties, and hobbies. The Medical Federation needs more financial support for students.
