Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma may be exacerbated by infection with the cold coronavirus.Cold coronavirus is a low-pathogenic virus that causes the symptoms of the common cold, unlike the new coronavirus and the highly pathogenic SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) coronavirus, but in the worst case, when the symptoms worsen. , May die from respiratory failure.
Editor's Note: The cold coronavirus used in this study is different from the new coronavirus.
Respiratory diseases such as bronchodilators and inhaled steroids are generally used to prevent the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma during viral infection. This time, a group led by Professor Mutsuo Yamatani of Tohoku University has clarified the mechanism by which respiratory disease inhalants contribute to the prevention of exacerbations of these diseases during cold coronavirus infection.
The research group said that they infected cultured human-derived respiratory airway epithelial cells with the cold coronavirus and investigated the effect of respiratory disease inhalers on the growth of the virus. As a result, it was found that the addition of a bronchodilator reduces the virus particle receptors on the cell surface, suppresses the adsorption of the virus, and further reduces the acidic endosomes, which are the structures into which the virus is taken up.The decrease in receptors and acidic endosomes was thought to suppress the growth of cold coronavirus and reduce the amount of virus released.Respiratory disease inhalants have also been found to suppress the release of substances that induce inflammation that exacerbates chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma. It was clarified that it contributes to the prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and exacerbation of bronchial asthma in Japan.
